Abstract Ideas

source

(First Grade Experience)

The 3 pieces of artwork above were used to discuss how an artist can represent an abstract idea through the use of the art elements (the words on the artwork were covered up during the discussion).

Questions:
Which artwork could be about Starting-over?  Which artwork could be about Freedom?  Which artwork could be about Sharing?

Responses:

 - The one with the feet could be about sharing because it looks like they’re outside enjoying the beautiful day together

- the one with the sun, it looks like a family, one is big, one is medium and one is small, like a baby

-the yellow one is like praying because it looks like they are together praying looking up at the sky

- the one in the middle could be about starting-over because it doesn't have to be an egg, it could be a chicken and when it grows up it’s going to have an egg and it will start all over again, like a cycle

- the blue one is about sharing because she has too many blueberries for her to eat so it looks like she is sharing, it reminds me of Blueberries For Sal

- the one with the egg in the nest could be about starting over because it's new

Prompt- Use the art elements of line, color and shape to create an artwork about Freedom, Starting-Over or Sharing

Kindergarten watercolor paintings

If we let it, nature can inspire us to create art.  Creating art inspires us to explore the potential both of the materials and our creative self...

How I Feel At Recess

Ms. Loan's Kindergarten Class

Kindergarten students had a conversation about feelings.  Do our feelings change at different times?  Can our feelings change during the same activity?  How do we feel at the beginning, middle and end of recess? If a feeling had a line or color what would that be?  Can art be used to show how we feel?   These drawings are responses to the question How do you feel at recess?

Animal Characters

Kinder and First are learning about curved and straight edged shapes, overlapping, pattern and contrast.  In a  previous post you can see the first lesson which was a collage of shapes.   I wanted to make sure they  understood the concepts so I decided to have them do another project where they had to think about the shapes they needed to cut for a particular animal.  First they drew and cut each body part separately and then glued the parts together while overlapping some of the shapes. Painting was the last step as they thought about contrast and pattern.

Squirrel

Dinosaur

Turtle

All of the above artwork is by Kindergarten.

In the video below, you see First Grade working on creating their animal characters.  I'm doing a different version with them.  We are gluing the animals to the front cover of a manila folder and on the inside they are creating a setting for their character and adding words to make it more of a book.
