Stormy Seas

The first graders are coming to understand how artists can create movement and mood with the elements of color and line.  By comparing two images (below) they came to their own conclusions on just how an artist might do that. They noticed everything.  The rocky water, bumpy lines, slanted boat,  the sun behind the clouds, various colors in the skies and water, and the list goes on.  Equipped with the newly discovered information, the seascapes came to life.

Art Journal Class

Imperfection is Beauty, Madness is genius...and I'd rather be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.

This year I've started a class for students who have an interest both in art and writing.  Students are exploring how the written word and art can become one cohesive piece as they also express their thoughts, questions and ideas about life.  Does it get any better than that?  Well, it does...A, they seem to be much more  at ease with a  100 page journal rather than one blank white paper staring at them.  In turn,  they are opening themselves up to taking risks-  ... B,  they design the entries as a reflection of who they are, their experiences, their thoughts and questions,  now it becomes personal and that my friend, is grand.
